Marcus Fraser has finished runner-up at the BMW International Open in Cologne, going down in a playoff to England’s Danny Willett at the fourth extra hole of a playoff.
The Australian three putted the final hole of the playoff after Willett had played a beautiful chip to set up a par at the par 4 18th hole at the Golf Club Gut Larchenhof.
Fraser bogeyed his final hole of regulation play and was forced to wait as Willet, playing two groups behind, finished his round. Willett appeared as if he might have lost his chance with a wild tee shot at the 72nd hole but salvaged par to take the event into extra holes.
Others were in the mix also including Chris Wood who would also have a chance to reach Fraser’s clubhouse score over the closing few holes but a bogey at the 17th hole saw him finish in a share of third with Gonzalo FDEZ Castano and Paul McGinley.
On a wet and windy day, scores reflected the conditions but a resurgent McGinley was the star of the final round his 6 under 66 by far the best of the day ahead of Sergio Garcia’s 67.
For 24 year old Willett, a former English Amateur Champion, it was his maiden European Tour victory after first joining the Tour in 2009.
Fraser earns €222,000 for his effort and moves to 15th in the Race to Dubai standings with €610,000.
