Minjee Lee US Girls Champion

West Australian Minjee Lee has won the US Girls’ Junior Championship at the Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City near San Francisco today.
Lee defeated Alison Lee of Valencia in California 1 up in the final after defeating the leading qualifier Ariya Jutanugarn in the semi final.
Lee, from the Royal Freemantle Golf Club south of Perth, is currently ranked as the 8th leading female golfer in the world amateur rankings and so had the credentials to do well this week although many felt the New Zealander Lydia Ko was the woman to beat.
Ko was beaten by Alison Lee in the semis, meaning a clash between her and Minjee Lee in the final, a match-up which Ko had won when the pair met in the semis of the Australian Amateur earlier this year, was avoided.
The final was a close fought battle with both players establishing leads of at least two up through various stages of their 36 hole final.
Alison Lee appeared to have the match in her keeping when she went three ahead through 30 holes but the American faltered over the closing holes and Minjee Lee was there to take advantage.
