Chris Williams Western Amateur Champ

University of Washington’s Chris Williams is the 2012 Western Amateur Champion, adding this overall title to his victory in the 72 hole qualifying event earlier in the week at the Exmoor Country Club near Chicago.

The highly decorated Williams defeated 23 year old Texan, Jordan Russell, after both finalists had been forced into extra time in their morning semi final match-ups.

The afternoon final was delayed by weather for nearly two hours but when they returned Williams would go on to win the match at the last by a 1 up margin.

Williams is the first player since Danny Lee in 2008 to win both the Stroke-Play and Match Play titles in the same year. Williams had also been the Medallist at last year’s event.

The Australian challenge was extinguished on Thursday when Daniel Nisbet and Matthew Stieger were suspended after Nisbet infringed tournament rules by caddying for his good friend in a playoff for one of the final spots in the match play field.

The US Amateur begins on August 13th at Cherry Hills in Colorado
