Stroke-play qualifying has been completed at the 112th US Women’s Amateur Championship in Cleveland in Ohio and 17 year old Korean golfer Kim Hyo Joo has secured Medalist honours, one shot ahead of New Zealander Lydia Ko.
Despite her young age, Kim has already amassed an outstanding record in amateur golf including victory at the Junior World Championship and has played well in the professional events in which she has competed in Korea in the last two years.
Kim was brilliant early in her round today, racing to the turn in 31 before a homeward nine of 37 saw her record her second round of 68.
After her opening round of 66 had given her the lead Ko fought back with a closing nine of34 to get within one of Kim’s lead but on the plus side she will avoid a clash with the very talented Korean until the final if they both make it that far.
The Australians in the field have done well. US Junior Champion Minjee Lee of Western Australia produced a second round of 69 to finish in a share of 6th, Breanna Elliott was 14th, Ashlee Dewhurst and Su Hyun Oh were 17th, Whitney Hillier was 32nd and Mathilda Poulsen 44th,
Grace Lennon was the only Australian to miss out on the field of 64 to contest the Match Play phase.
