15 year old New Zealander Lydia Ko will face 18 year old American Jaye Marie Green in tomorrow’s 36 hole final at the US Women’s Amateur Championship at the Country Club in Cleveland Ohio.
Ko will be chasing a unique double for New Zealand golf with Ko’s fellow countryperson Danny Lee having won the US Amateur Championship in 2008.
Ko, the No. 1 player in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking, defeated Ariya Jutanugarn, 16, of Thailand, 3 and 1. Jutanugrn is the number two player in those same rankings.
Green, the lone American to make the semifinals, defeated Nicole Zhang, 20, of Canada, 2 up.
Ko was never behind in her match moving ahead for the first time when she birdied the 4th hole. Ko would be 5 under when she finished the match at the 17th.
Green went ahead early in her match against Zhang but the Canadian fought back on two occasions before a birdie at the final hole gave Green the match 2 up.
Green as one over for her 18 holes and so on current form Ko appears to be the one to beat tomorrow.
The final of the most significant event in female amateur golf provides a title that will help establish either of these two fine players in professional golf when that time comes and promises to be hard fought although it would be a surprise to see Ko defeated.
