The opening round of the US Amateur Championship is underway at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village near Denver in Colorado where nine Australians are lining up for the chance to become just the second Australian to win amateur golf’s most coveted title. Nick Flanagan became the first when he won in 2003.
Two venues are being used for the opening 36 holes namely the Cherry Hills Country Club and the nearby Tom Doak designed CommonGround Golf Course.
Following on from 15 year old Lydia Ko’s marvellous victory yesterday at the US Women’s Amateur Championship in Ohio, the Australians will be looking to add further to Australasian success in the event in recent times as New Zealander Danny Lee also won this title in 2008.
Australians Daniel Nisbet, Matthew Stieger, Jake Higginbottom, Cameron Smith, Brett Drewitt, Ryan McCarthy, Rory Bourke, Todd Sinnott and Oliver Goss will all play the 36 holes of strokeplay on Monday and Tuesday to determine the leading 64 qualifiers who will advance to the match play phase of the competition.
The William Flynn designed Cherry Hills has staged some of the game’s greatest events including three US Opens, a US Women’s Open and a US Amateur when Phil Mickelson won in 1990.
