McIntosh tears apart Queensland Open field

Brad McIntosh has torn apart the Ipswich Golf Club layout for the second successive day to take a four-stroke lead into tomorrow’s third round of the Roadcon Group Queensland Open. Having set the pace yesterday with a scintillating eight-under 64, the Wollongong 23-year-old shot 66 today to re-affirm that he is the man to beat in the $105,000 Von Nida Tour event.

McIntosh’s nearest challenger is Victorian journeyman David Diaz, who also shot 66 today to move to 10-under after his opening round 68. The best round of the day came from first-year professional Darren Beck, who sunk seven birdies in a superb round of 65. The 27-year-old is outright third, six shots adrift of fellow New South Welshman McIntosh. "The course suits him (McIntosh). I’ve just got to hang in there," Beck said.

A confident McIntosh backed himself to again shoot the lights out this weekend and turn the Open into a one-man show.

“I like going from the front. Hopefully I can just play for myself the next two days and do what I did the last two days, and try to keep making a lot of birdies out there because it’s that kind of course,” said McIntosh, a joint runner-up in last year’s Open.

“Overall, my game’s good enough to do it four days in a row.”

Three players – Tony Carolan, Stuart Bouvier and Peter Senior – share fourth place at seven under. Senior shot 66 today but rated his round as “ordinary”.

“I hit it poorly off the tee today, which I don’t normally do but it’s always nice to shoot a score when you don’t play that well,” the Queensland veteran said.

“If you only make one bogey when you’re playing ordinary, then you’re doing alright.” Senior said he would need to shoot “a couple of 65s” this weekend to have any chance of hauling in McIntosh. Nathan Uebergang (67, 71) and Kevin Lee (69, 69) are the leading amateurs at six-under 138.
