Draper wins the 2012 Qld Men's Mid Am

12 Sep 2012

Keperra Golf Club member, Mark Draper, has won the 2012 Queensland Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at the RACV Royal Pines Resort.

Draper opened his campaign with a sluggish opening round of a two over par 74 on the first day, to sit in the top 15. An even par round of 72 on the second day shot Draper up the leader board, in striking distance of the leaders.

Starting the final round three shots adrift from the leader Guy Wall (Pymble), Draper showed his intention early, opening with a birdie on the first hole. This was one of five birdies.

Draper’s final round of three under par (69) was enough to win the Championship with a total of 215 (-1).

Guy Wall was one shot back in second place on 216 (Ev) after a closing round of one over par-73. This followed his opening round of 75(+3) and a fantastic second round of 68 (-4) which was the lowest of the tournament.

Jason McDonald (Brookwater) finished on 217 (+1) to secure third place.

As part of Srixon’s support of this year’s Championship, each player was invited to receive a dozen Z-Star Golf Balls and compete in a separate nett event. Mark Coonan from the Pacific Golf Club was extremely happy to have made the decision to compete, as it led to him winning the Srixon 54 Hole Challenge. Coonan shot nett rounds of 71, 72 and a final day nett 66 to take home a year’s supply (12 × 12 dozen boxes) of the Srixon Z Star Ball. Coonan was one of 106 players that chose to play the Srixon ball at this year’s championship, as did the Championship winner Mark Draper.

In the Upper Mid-Amateur Division (44-54 years) John Fearnley (Dunheved) finished on 218 (2) to edge Nudgee Golf Club member Gary Heslop after he finished runner up on 219 (3).

In the Srixon Teams event section, it was a close battle between two Brisbane based golf clubs. The eventual winners were the team from Nudgee Golf Club which comprised of Steve Toyne, Grant Fenell and Gary Heslop. The winning score left them with a one shot win over the team from Keperra Golf Club (Tony Robertson, Daniel Butler and Trent Greer).

In a new initiative for the 2012 event, a Srixon NTP Challenge was held on the Monday afternoon. Each player had one attempt at a 60m pitch shot from the clubhouse to the practice chipping green. After numerous close shots from competitors the eventual winner was Grant Pearce of North Lakes Golf Club, Grant’s great pitch resulted in him winning a limited edition Never Compromise Putter.

It was the first of a three year agreement to have the 2012 Queensland Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship hosted at RACV Royal Pines Resort. With a record field of 150 players and the fantastic feedback received by players over the three days, it is certain to be “must play” event in 2013 and 2014.

Golf Queensland wish to thank Srixon, RACV Royal Pines Resort and Coca Cola Amatil for their fantastic support of the event.
