The LPGA Tour has rushed back from the Women’s British Open in Liverpool to play the Navistar LPGA Championship in Prattville in Alabama.
It has been a quick turnaround for many and while the impressive winner at Royal Liverpool, Jiyai Shin, is not in the field, the world number three, Stacy Lewis is and will probably start as the favourite.
Lewis finished 6th in the event last year and having finished inside the top ten in each of her last three starts this season she is well placed to improve on her previous best around the Senator Course at Capitol Hill, part of the RTJ Trail group of courses.
World number one, Yani Tseng, is also in the field but she continues to struggle of late. Tseng has played this event on most occasions previously and while midfield last year she has played the course well in earlier years.
So Yeon Ryu has won two of her last five events and last week finished 5th at the British Open. She has developed into a very consistent player and the 2011 US Women’s Open Champions appears set to continue her rise in the game’s rankings. This will be Ryu’s first time in this event.
Three Australians will play the tournament headed by the 2010 winner of the event, Katherine Hull. Hull has struggled for much of the 2012 season although there have been signs in recent starts that things could improve quickly.
Sarah Jane Smith and Sarah Kemp are also in the field.
