Stacy Lewis has won her third event of the 2012 season and her 4th LPGA Tour title with a gritty victory at the Navistar LPGA Classic in Prattville, Alabama.
The current world number three will go back ahead of Na Yeon Choi into the second position on the Rolex Rankings as a result of this victory and continue to close the gap on the incumbent number one, Yani Tseng.
Lewis was forced to hold off a spirited last round challenge by the defending champion Lexi Thompson, Thompson closing within one after starting the final round five behind before a late birdie by Lewis gave the 27 year old the cushion she needed to secure the victory.
It was Lewis’ 14th top ten of the year and her 9th top five and having started the season in 10th position in the Rolex World Ranking, the progress she has made has been further highlighted.
Thompson opened her final round with a bogey but she would then birdie six of her next eleven holes to apply the pressure to Lewis. Another birdie at the 17th had her within one but ten minutes later Lewis would ease two shots clear with a birdie at the 16th.
Haeji Kang, Angela Stanford and Mi Jung Hur tied for 3rd one shot behind Thompson.
Australian Sarah Jane Smith produced her best official LPGA Tour finish since this event four years ago when she finished in a share of 6th and secured a cheque for US$41,000. That will move her close to the top 60 on the money list.
Katherine Hull was the only other Australian to make the cut finishing 46th.
