Guthrie wins again, Percy & Lee second

Rookie Luke Guthrie’s meteoric rise in professional golf continued today when he won his second Web.Com Tour in succession and secured his 6th top ten in seven starts this season at the WNB Classic in Midland Texas.

Guthrie has also played three events on the PGA Tour in 2012 finishing inside the top twenty in all three.

Guthrie is completing a business management degree at the University of Illinois while competing in his first year as a professional and it may soon be that it is his own business that requires most managing.

Guthrie’s victory over defending champion, New Zealander Danny Lee and Australian Cameron Percy will move him to the top of the Web.com Tour money list and given his consistency there is clearly more to come before the season is out.

Another win would also give him starts in the PGA Tour’s Fall Series should he so choose although he is not entered in next week’s Chiquita Classic in North Carolina.

Guthrie’s final round of 66 saw the event develop into a three way battle between he, Lee and Percy over the final few holes but it would be a late bogey by the New Zealander at the 15th and consecutive bogeys by Percy at the 15th and 16th that would eventually cost them their chance.

While Percy will be disappointed with his costly finish he will be delighted that the second placed prize-money will eliminate any doubts regarding his status on the PGA Tour in 2013. A few weeks ago it appeared that was a given but losing four places last week gave rise to some doubts entering his mind.

Now Percy need not worry as he will move back inside the top ten on the money list.

Lee will no doubt be heading to the PGA Tour’s Fall Series in two week’s time but he does get another chance at this coming week’s Chiquita Classic on the Web.com Tour.

Tim Wilkinson 9th and Steve Allan 20th were the next best of the Australasians.
