Cain and Bloomfield winners in Toowoomba
BY PGA of Australia | 29 Sep 2012
The Toowoomba region is normally known for its Carnival of flowers at this time of year. Today however it was upstaged by professional golf, with 64 professionals taking to the fairways of the Toowoomba Golf Club for the 2012 Toowoomba BMW/Westpac Middleridge Pro Am.
Queensland Sunshine Tour stalwart, Marcus Cain, was the early leader with the clubhouse lead after the morning field firing a four under par 68. Cain, a winner at the Ipswich Pro Am a day earlier endured an agonising five hour wait while the afternoon field played to see if his score would hold up for the win. Fortunately for Cain, Ben Bloomfield could only manage to tie his morning round of 68 with both players being declared joint champions.
With the Toowoomba Golf Club once again presented in immaculate condition, Ben Bloomfield was full of praise about the course and how well the tournament was run. “I have been too many Pro Am’s in my career but this has certainly got to be up there with the best. Right from the time I arrived this morning the event has had a real tournament feel about it, something we don’t get to experience all that much in Pro Am golf. The past 12 months have been a real struggle for me, but it’s great to see the signs of good golf returning and I am really looking forward to the final events on the Queensland Sunshine Tour over the next few weeks.”
Both Cain and Bloomfield finished one shot ahead of Ben Wedmaier, his best finish to date on the Queensland Sunshine Tour. A further five player’s finished in a tie for fourth on 70 which included Brendan Chant, Sven Puymbroeck, Heath Reed, Paul Donahoo and Matthew Ballard.
Grant Scott who entered today’s event three points ahead of Brad Andrews in the race for the Order of Merit title will also leave with a three point lead after both players shot a two over par 74. With only four rounds remaining in the Order of Merit season, both professionals will be looking to take a valuable advantage over the next two events with Andrews looking for third Order of Merit win in the past five years.
The next event on the Queensland Sunshine Tour will be the Queensland PGA Foursomes Championship to be played on Tuesday 2nd October at the Sanctuary Cove Palms course.
