Nisbet the standout at Stage One
BY Bruce Young | 20 Oct 2012
Stage One PGA Tour qualifying has been completed at six of 14 venues across the USA and there has already been some success for Australia, none more so than the performance of Caboolture golfer Daniel Nisbet.
Playing at the Lantana Golf Club in Texas, Nisbet blitzed the field of 75, winning by a massive 12 shots and securing a place at Stage Two in mid November.
Following an indifferent performance at the Eisenhower Trophy in Turkey two weeks ago, Nisbet produced a stunning display more in keeping with his capabilities, the 2012 Players Am Champion the only player to produce four rounds in the 60’s and build just the right sort of momentum for the journey ahead.
Earlier in 2012 Nisbet finished runner-up at the Australian Amateur Championship and the Master of the Amateurs before winning the Lake Macquarie Championship in Newcastle.
In Nevada, Rhein Gibson who earlier this year recorded a round of 55 on a par 71 layout, recovered from an opening round of 74 to grab one of the 19 positions available at the Dayton Valley Golf Club. Gibson finished in 6th position.
Gibson is originally from Lismore in NSW before he attended college in the US.
At the same venue, New Zealand’s Ryan Fox missed out by one shot on advancing
In Palm Desert in California, Won Joon Lee held on to finish 16th and earn his way through despite a final round of 75.
Stage One qualifying continues at eight further venues over the next week with several more Australians taking their chances.
