18 year old West Australian amateur Oliver Goss today added the John Hughes Geely Nexus Risk Services West Australian Open to his 2012 West Australian Amateur Championship title with a thrilling playoff victory over his fellow sandgroper Brady Watt at the Royal Perth Golf Club.
Goss, who made the cut in last week’s Perth International event against a significantly stronger field, gave further evidence of the class of player he is and is about to become with a final round of 66 which included birdies at the final two holes.
It took five holes to separate the pair with Goss finally winning when the pair played the 8th hole for the third occasion having played the 18th twice.
Two shots from the playoff was the pre tournament favourite Brett Rumford ensuring a West Australian trifecta.
Earlier this year Goss also made the Quarter Finals of the US Amateur Championship and with a scholarship at the University of Tennessee locked in place for January of 2013 then Goss is clearly headed for even greater things in amateur golf.
Last week Watt won the Keperra Bowl in Brisbane, a national event for Golf Australia.
Brett Rumford birdied the final four holes to finish 3rd, the Royal Perth member giving locals plenty to get excited about over the closing stages.
Goss will now fly to Bangkok for this week’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship where a victory would guarantee a start at the Masters in Augusta next year. Given the form he is in then such a feat is not beyond reach.
