Rory McIlory has further cemented his place at the top of the game with an emphatic victory at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

Five consecutive birdies in the closing five holes in today’s final round allowed the 23 year old to move from two behind Justin Rose, after a bogey at the 13th, to win by two over Rose and claim his 5th worldwide victory of the year. This though his first victory outside of the USA.

Luke Donald and Charl Schwartzel finished in a tie for third position, three shots behind Rose, with Louis Oosthuizen alone in 5th.

McIlroy arrived in Dubai off the back of a missed cut at last week’s Hong Kong Open but it was more an issue with a cold and fatigue than anything being wrong with his game. That proved to be the case as he finished off this week’s event in the most magnificent style.

McIlory would say later that his tee shot at the 17th was the shot that gave him most satisfaction. Over 200 yards and into a slight breeze his five iron avoided any of the dangers the hole presented and set up his fourth consecutive birdie.

When he holed that he had moved ahead of Rose who finished nearly an hour beforehand. One final birdie at the par five last extended the winning margin to two.

It’s unbelievable. I didn’t get off to the best of starts today and saw Justin making his charge up the leaderboard and knew I had to do something special.

I felt ok today. Again I did not feel too well last night but I knew I came in here playing well and just needed to hole a few more putts.

Justin Rose finished runner-up in both this event and in the Race to Dubai ranking although some €!.8 million behind the Race to Dubai Champion. Rose will next play at the Australian Open when he tees it up at the Lakes Golf Club in Sydney.

Marcus Fraser was the only Australian in the field and finished 40th. Fraser will now rush to California to compete at the Final Stage of Qualifying for the PGA Tour.
