Matt Stieger leads NSW PGA

New South Welshman Matt Stieger will lead the NSW PGA Championship into the weekend with a one stroke lead over his nearest competitor, Sweden’s Thomas Petersson.
With two consecutive rounds of 5-under 67, Stieger’s experience on the Mt. Broughton layout is now paying dividends, the 21 year old comfortable and confident on the course.
“I’ve had some good results playing here, I won the Champions trophy back in 2009 playing here. It’s one of my favourite courses,” said the 2011 Australian Amateur champion.
“I’m putting well and holed out for eagle on the first which helps. But if you hit a bad tee shot here you’re straight in the grass and you have to tee it up again, so you have to play smart on every hole.”
In playing only his sixth tournament as a Professional, Stieger is one of many decorated amateurs who have recently joined the PGA Tour of Australasia.
“There are a lot of young guys coming through the amateur ranks which is really good for Australian golf,” he said.
And while some rookies struggle with the transition, Stieger says his experience has been nothing but positive.
“I’m loving it. It makes all the hard work worthwhile and it’s good to get out here and mix it with the big boys.”
Stieger leads by 1 over Thomas Petersson who shot a round of 4-under par.
New Zealand’s Ryan Fox shares third position with Adam Stephens, Pieter Zwart, Kris Mueck and Anthony Summers who share third position at 7-under par.
Overnight leader Jake Higginbottom had a difficult day, shooting a round of 1-over to share 8th position with Anthony Brown. Kyle Grant, Deyen Lawson and amateur Callan O’Reily.
