Legends ready for Byron showdown
BY PGA of Australia | Australian Seniors Tour | 2012 Nor East Australian Legends Tour Championship | Preview | 18 Dec 2012
The E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour will finish on a high in the coastal town of Byron Bay this week with the Nor East Australian Legends Tour Championship.
Teeing off today, the star studded field includes defending champion and 1991 British Open winner Ian Baker-Finch, Australia’s only 2012 winner on the European Seniors Tour Terry Price as well as some of the nation’s most successful Professionals Mike Harwood, Peter Fowler, Michael Clayton and Rodger Davis.
However the biggest drawcard for the tournament will be the 2012 Emirates Australian Open champion Peter Senior. Proving that golf is a game for life, Senior overcame his much younger rivals in challenging conditions at The Lakes Golf Club just two weeks ago.
“He has inspired us all, the way he goes about his business on the golf course hasn’t changed since his first win back in the 80’s, to his recent Australian PGA and Open victories” said former PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit winner Ossie Moore.
Moore, who this year claimed his first victory on the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour at the Queensland Senior PGA Championship, knows the competition will be tough in Byron Bay.
“Fowler, Harwood, Price, these guys are hitting it longer and straighter than ever before and now Pete has shown them they are still good enough to win.”
While not the biggest name amongst golf fans, E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour rookie, Kym Olsen has certainly made his presence felt.
“I have been very lucky this year to be playing well at the right time and I think this week is just another case of peaking at the right time,” said Olsen who leads the Order of Merit.
“I may not have the same credentials as some of the Legends we play with, though I think I am a realistic chance of winning our last event of the year”.
In its third year, the Nor East Australian Legends Tour Championship will tee off this morning and Tournament Director Mark Wilson is looking forward to seeing some of the games greats put on a show for the Northern Rivers community.
“The course is in outstanding condition at the moment and it will be set up to ensure there are plenty of birdies for one of golf’s outstanding spectacles.”
“Where else can you see PGA Professionals with more than 300 Tour wins amongst them in the same place at the same time, not to mention in an atmosphere like no other”.
Spectators are welcome and entry is free with the 2012 Nor East Australian Legends Tour Champion set to be crowned on Thursday afternoon.
The Nor East Legends Tour Championship is being played at Byron Bay Golf Club from 18 – 20 December 2012 with $45,000 up for grabs.
