Brown, Jeffress and Dartnall off to Open

BY Bruce Young | 30 Jan 2013

New Zealander Mark Brown, New South Welshman Steve Jeffress and West Australian Stephen Dartnall have secured a prized start at the Open Championship in 2013 after finishing as the leading three qualifiers at the International Final Qualifying at Kingston Heath today.

37 year old Brown, who produced a brilliant course record second round of 62, will get to play in his second Open Championship having first played in 2009 when he missed the cut.

For Jeffress and Dartnall however they will get to play a major championship for the first occasion.

Young Queensland amateur Cameron Smith, who shared the lead after day one, was one of a large group who finished just behind the leading three, the 19 year Australian Amateur Champion’s double bogey at the 16th proving very costly. He still had a chance playing the last to force a playoff with Dartnall but a lengthy birdie putt missed.

Others finishing at 7 under and one behind the third placed Dartnall were Neven Basic, Peter O’Malley, Scott Laycock and Anthony Summers.
