Jiyai Shin back to near best

The second highest ranked player at this week’s Volvik RACV Ladies Masters Jiyai Shin talked to the media today about her return to form from hand surgery and some of the issues she faced being the world number one golfer.
Shin had a hand operation last May to repair a small broken bone in her wrist but on her return two months later she was soon playing like the Shin of old. Two wins including a brilliant victory at the Women’s British Open at Hoylake suggested the problem was well and truly fixed.
“It was actually I don’t know exactly the name of it but it was a small bone was broken, so I just go ahead and it take 2 months for the recovery. My first event was at the Evian, but I didn’t play very well, because I couldn’t use my left arm or hand, so I lost a lot of strength on my left side so my balance wasn’t quite good. But I really enjoy the play, because I missed the golf game for a couple of months.
Shin also discussed the pressure she felt for perfection when she reached the number one position in the game. Reaching number one in May of 2010 she replaced Lorena Ochoa at the top of the female game but a year later she was struggling comparatively to keep that level of play going.
“When I was number 1 I had a lot of pressure on myself, sometimes to push myself because I sometimes think I am number 1 so I have to make it perfect. So pressure myself, but now I am 8th or around there so I’m more comfortable. But I still look up at the 1 or so, so its lots of hard training and practice.
When asked if she would handle things differently next time around if she gets back to number one again she responded, “Yes definitely. I would know how much pressure there is to be number one and I would play with experience, so I learn a lot. I would be in better control of myself.”
Shin will start as one of the favourites this week given her previous good form at Royal Pines (she finished runner-up in her first start in 2007) and her current form. “I think I am pretty much ready for this week,” she said with a glint in her eye.
