Watt 4th at South African Stroke Play

BY Bruce Young | 19 Feb 2013

Brady Watt last week finished 4th at the South African Strokeplay Championship four shots behind the winner, Hayden Porteous. at the Ernie Els designed Oubaai Golf Club in George.

An inward nine of 2 over par during the final round cost Watt any chance of contending for the title but it was yet another good tournament for one of the amateur game’s hottest players at present.

New Zealander Vaughn McCall and Victorian Geoff Drakeford were next best of the Australasians when they finished in a share of 10th position.

Porteous, the leading amateur in South Africa, was defending his title and became just the third player in the history of this event to do so. He had his share of luck, however, narrowly avoiding the out of bounds at the 4th hole and making are then after finding the rough at the 9th he holed from 70 yards for an eagle.

Watt, Drakeford, Lucas Herbert and Ryan Ruffles are heading back to Victoria almost immediately to tee it up at the Victorian Open beginning on Thursday.
