Keating caps great season at Vic Open

Stacey Keating has won her own State Open Championship with a two shot victory over West Australian Kristie Smith and Englishwoman Hannah Burke at the Victorian Open at 13th Beach Golf on the Bellarine Peninsula.

Canberra’s Nikki Campbell was one shot further back and alone in 4th position.

Despite an early bogey in her final round and a bogey at the last, Keating had done enough over the opening three rounds to establish a cushion from which she would not be beaten.

A stretch of holes through the middle of her final round, during which she played six holes in five under par, consolidated the lead she had created and the two time Ladies European Tour winner in 2012 has displayed at home what she has been achieving overseas.

Smith, who recorded nine birdies and two eagles in her opening round of 66, began quickly again today racing to 6 under par through 12 holes before the run ended.

For Smith, who has the option of playing in Europe or the US this year, her game appears to be coming around and it may be that she is on track for a very good season.

The event brought to a close the summer of golf for the ALPG Tour in 2013 with Keating leading the Order of Merit by nearly A$30,000 over Karrie Webb.
