Riversdale Cup underway

The 72 hole Riversdale Cup is being played this week at the Riversdale Golf Club in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs.
Last year’s runaway winner, Jake Higginbottom, is no longer eligible having turned professional following his New Zealand Open victory last year and the stage this year is left to the likes of Brady Watt, Geoff Drakeford, Nathan Holman, Taylor McDonald, Brett Drewitt and New Zealanders Vaughn McCall and Josh Munn in the men’s event.
Brady Watt has been one of the most impressive Australian amateurs in the past six months and appears a good chance to extend that record. Watt won the Keperra Bowl event in Brisbane in October, finished runner-up to Oliver Goss at the West Australian Open and runner-up to Viraat Bhadwar at the Master of the Amateurs.
The women’s Riversdale Cup field is headlined by Su Hyun Oh, Grace Lennon, Jenny Lee and Hayley Bettencourt.
Oh finished runner-up to Karrie Webb at the recent Volvik RACV Ladies Masters at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast, a repeat performance of which should see her go close to winning this week.
The tournament has a long history in Australian golf having been first played in 1896.
