Australia completes remarkable win in Malaysia

After round one of the World Amateur Teams Championship in Kuala Lumpur, the highly credentialled Australian team of Lindsey Wright, Katherine Hull and Vicky Uwland were languishing in twentieth place. Tonight they stand as holders of the Esperito Santo Trophy.
This is the second win for Australia since the inaugural event was played in 1964, their only other win being in 1978 when Lindy Goggin, Edwina Kennedy and Jane Lock took the title.
All three players played their parts but the efforts of Lindsey Wright and Katherine Hull were, in particular, impressive. Both play for the University of Pepperdine in California and with Wright finishing in a tie for second in the leading individual standings behind Thailand's Aree Song Wongluekiet and Hull finishing tied for fourth, they proved an effective combination.
At the end of the four rounds they were tied with Thailand but by virtue of the final round score of their third player, Vicky Uwland, being better than that of Thailand's third team member, Australia won the event for the second time. Uwland's 78 was not exactly a lot to beat but Thailand's Titiya Plucksataporn's finish of four consecutive bogeys for a final round 81 proved costly for the team that had lead virtually throughout.
Spain finished in third place and Germany fourth.
The New Zealand team of Brenda Ormsby, Tina Howard and Wendy Hawkes slipped to finish in twentieth place. In the individuals, Ormsby was 42nd at eleven over after a last round 79, Hawkes also a last round of 79 was 43rd and Hawkes a final round 84 for 62nd, was 19 for the four rounds.
