World Urban Golf Day in Newcastle
17 Sep 2013
The sport of Urban Golfing continues to grow both in Australia and around the world. This Saturday the 21st will be the World Urban Golf Day #7 event in Newcastle.
Over the last year it has been exciting to see the growth in off-course and Urban Golfing. 2013 will mark the 7th year of the World Urban Golf Day events, which this year is honoured in France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Netherlands, USA, Australia and Canada.
The day, which is more like a week these days due to timezones and available weekends, celebrates the sport and exposes golf to hundreds of players who would never have picked up a club. Earlier this year Urban Golfing held it’s first cross border competition the European Challenge which pitted the best crossgolfing teams from Germany against the best streetgolfers France had to offer.
Germany took out the inaugural event which promises to continue to grow by including more countries and teams. Look out for a growth in Urban Golfing in Japan as a film crew based in Tokyo has just finished touring the US and Canada filming a documentary about the sport.
In the US, RedBull are still touring their favourite young golfer Ricky Fowler across the country in a series of competitions where Ricky takes on other pro’s in off course challenges. There is a heap of great videos on youtube.
Back at home here in Australia we are in for an exciting summer of Urban Golf events. Look out for competitions in Newcastle, NSW (September) for World Urban Golf Day #7, Adelaide, SA (October) as part of PlayGolf week, Perth, WA (November) as part of the WA week of golf and a very special event in Melbourne, VIC (February).
As with everything these days we’re proud to announce that yes, there is an app for that. 3d Urban Golf can be downloaded from the apple store for iphone and according to their website you can “Play urban golf in edgy and unusual locations from city rooftops to train yards & storm drains, your swing is no longer restricted to the greens at country clubs.
Go freestyle and hit your ball anywhere you like on the 26 courses. In each level you will find the holes in trash cans, doorways even shipping containers.” Pro shops and stores interested in stocking Urban Golf clothing or equipment or if your club is interested in holding an Urban Golf event/demo can contact Urban Golf Australia via their website. www.australianurbangolf.com
From beaches to city streets and even the back paddock more and more young are picking up golf clubs and playing their own way. As golf evolves it is important for clubs and members to accept and include all variations of this great game so that it can remain to be popular and relevant for years to come.
