Brooks Koepka leads the opening event of the 2014 PGA Tour season in California, the 23 year old three time European Challenge Tour winner this season already with European Tour status for 2014 but now with the opportunity to add PGA Tour status if he was to go on with it this week.
Koepka made the decision to play Europe in 2012 after leaving college. He was keen to make himself into a more rounded player than the US might have offered him in the early stages of his career and he ahs to be admired for taking that route. It is paying off and now, back in his homeland and playing on invite this week, he is showing the golfing world why he is a genuine future star.
This is Koepka’s 4th PGA Tour starts having played the US Open, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship previously, the US Open as an amateur at Olympic last year just before turning professional.
Koepka leads by one over the runner-up in this event last year, Jason Kokrak with Robert Garrigus and 2010 Moonah Classic winner, Jim Herman, one shot further back.
Not a great week for the Australasians in the field thus far with Robert Allenby the best of them in 41st position, New Zealander Danny Lee 51st and Geoff Ogilvy the only other to make the cut in 66th place, although Marc Leishman, John Senden, Scott Gardiner and Tim Wilkinson all missed by just one.
