Shigeru Nonaka has won just one tournament on the Japan Golf Tour and a lesser one at that but through 36 holes of the most significant golf in Japanese golf the 43 year old leads the Japan Open Championship by one shot over Shintaro Kai who has won only once on the Japan Tour and that was five years ago.
The in-form Shingo Katayama and Koumei Oda lurk ominously just one shot further back in a share of third position.
Brad Kennedy, continuing his good season in Japan, heads the Australians in a share of 12th and just five from the lead although realistically perhaps only three from the potential contenders.
Scott Strange is one shot further back while Aaron Townsend is at even par and well enough placed as the event heads into the weekend.
Steve Conran is 31st but perhaps the greatest effort from the Australian contingent came from 18 year old NSW Amateur Cameron Davis who made the cut with a birdie at his last hole for a round of 76 to just make the weekend.
