The Japan Golf Tour plays the Mynavi ABC Championship at the ABC Golf Club in Hyogo Prefecture, the event a long time favourite amongst the Japanese Tour players as it has always been one of the more lucrative on the Japan Golf Tour.
The event does not offer quite the same level of prize-money it has in earlier years but the 76 player field represents the leading players on this year’s money list barring Hideki Matsuyama who is in the field for this week’s WGC HSBC Champions event in Shanghai.
Korea’s Han Lee is the defending champion although the 36 year old has yet to record a top ten this season and is well below the level of form that saw him as a regular contender in events last year.
The field contains only two Australasians, Kurt Barnes and David Smail.
Barnes finished 3rd last week and moved to 69th on the money list from his previous 95th. He needs to remain inside the top 70 by season’s end and provided his improved form continues there should be no real issue in that regard.
Smail, too, is another who needs a good tournament. The New Zealander is currently 67th on the money list and give it has been eight years since his last victory in Japan, he will be hoping for a good finish or two in the weeks ahead to protect his security of tenure there.
