Australian Jason King and Ross Bain of Scotland shared the clubhouse lead in the second round of the Asian Tour 2006 Qualifying School Final Stage today.
Both players started the round from the 10th tee at the Palm Resort Golf and Country Club’s Cempaka Course.
Bain, the former Asian Tour regular, is looking to renew old ties with Asia as he fired a three-under-par 69 bringing his two-day total to eight-under-par 136 in the weather disrupted-event.
A one and a half hour suspension of play in the evening due to heavy rain meant that all afternoon session golfers, including first round leader Brad Kennedy of Australia, will have to resume their rounds tomorrow morning.
“Quite pleased with myself but my main target is to finish in the top three,” said the Scottish talent, who enjoyed a blemish free round as he birdied the 11th, 18th and fourth holes.
King, after a solid 66 yesterday, was a stroke off in the second round on 70.
King teed off the back nine with a birdie on the 10th hole followed by two bogeys and a birdie. He closed in with two birdies on the front nine.
Former Pakistan No.1 Mohamed Shabbir Iqbal was tied in third position when he scored a 67 to a total of 137 at the Cempaka Course. He is determined to carry on him winning form after clinching the Chief of Naval Staff Golf Championship title last month on home soil.
“I scored a 69 today and enjoyed a bogey-free round so it has been very good. I aim to carry my momentum through to this year as I had won numerous local tournaments in 2005,” said Shabbir, who was Pakistan’s No.1 golfer from 2000-2004.
Mohamed Shabbir was tied alongside American Scott Taylor who also played on the Cempaka Course. Scott, who is a regular feature on the Asian Tour since the mid-90s, shot a 69 together with Korea’s Kang Ji-man who carded a 66 and Australian Martin Doyle on 68.
“It is a mental battle out there. I have been trying to stay focused despite the hot, humid and wet conditions here. I made some mental mistakes yesterday and was adamant not to repeat them today, which I did,” said Taylor.
“It is great to be back playing especially after a four week break which has served me well,” he said.
Local golfer M.Sasidaran improved in the second round when he carded a 67 to a total of 141 and was tied 19th position.
