The Lakes Ladies Black Marker Challenge
12 Dec 2013
On Saturday 7th December the normal Monthly Medal at The Lakes Golf Club had extra interest with the Board of the club inviting some of the elite female members to compete against some of the elite male members with everyone playing off the Black Championship Tees.
The Lakes held the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Men’s Australian Open Championships and the A grade club members play the same championship course each monthly medal. The 6,290 metre par 72 iconic layout provides a true test for golfers of any ability.
The six ladies who were keen to take up the challenge played off handicaps ranging from 1 to 6. The objective was pure curiosity to see how the ladies would handle the men’s championship tees in comparison to how some of the men handle the course. With the pending introduction of the Slope system in January that will allow all golfers to play off a range of different tees in competitions the timing was perfect. The Lakes has numerous female members who are “Full Playing Members” who regularly play in the Saturday competition off the ladies tees.
Whilst there were many birdies on the front nine the testing lakes on the back nine along with the wind that picked up in the afternoon literally blew out most scores with Melissa Brydon posting an 86 as the lowest score.
Despite the high scores most of the ladies were still smiling after their round as you can see in the picture below and are keen to have another go off the championship tees again next year.
For the record, the low score of the day for the men off the black tees was member and PGA Tour newcomer Theo Coroneo with a great 2 under score of 70. Theo was closely followed by none other than member and dual Australian Open Winner Peter Lonard who shot an even par 72, as did another PGA member who is a member of The Lakes Stephen Moriarty. The best amateur score of the day was 75 by long term member Ian Watt.
