The Party has begun at The Jack
Special Events Tour | 2013 Jack Newton Celebrity Classic | Preview | 17 Dec 2013
The fairways have been tended to, the fridges have been stocked and the wildlife has all been on it’s best behaviour . This morning over 200 golfers, including celebrities, Pros and Juniors are making their way onto the gorgeous course at Cypress Lakes Resort by Oaks Hotels and Resorts in the NSW Hunter Valley for the social event of the year, The Jack Newton Celebrity Classic.
The Tournament officially kicks off this morning, although many participants arrived yesterday to take advantage of the practice round offered to all the players. Not only a chance to brush up on their skills but to catch up with old friends.
When asked what he likes most about the event Jack Newton says “It’s not only a chance to raise money for two causes very close to my heart, Diabetes Awareness and The Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation but it’s also nice to see the sometimes unlikely relationships which form over the years”
With an eclectic mix of people from TV, Film, Sport, Music and the corporate world attending the event each December, people who may never have otherwise met are thrown together on the course for a great couple of days of golf and fundraising.
The long list of professional golfers this year includes Sarah Kemp, James Nitties, Nicky Henderson, Kurt Barnes and last year’s Classic winner Brendan Smith. There are also a few celebrity players starting with good handicaps. Some of the lower numbers belong to Luke Elvy (7), Matt Parsons (7), Wendell Sailor (13) and Matt Dunning (13). The player with the best handicap on the celebrity field is Tim Brasher with a 6.
The festivities kicked off last night at Jack’s traditional Welcome BBQ, where Newton lays down some of the house rules, including if your late for your tee time be prepared to pay a fine, all of which goes to the charity. Jack’s final piece of advice to players about the event last night “It’s the Melbourne Cup, Not the Golden Slipper…pace yourselves”
