Hyundai TOC noticeable by absentees

BY Bruce Young | US PGA Tour | 2014 Hyundai Tournament of Champions | Preview | 28 Dec 2013

The field for the opening PGA Tour event of 2014, the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at the Plantation Course in Kapalua on Maui has been confirmed with Adam Scott the leading world ranked player to tee it up on January 3rd.

Scott will play the Hyundai and the Sony Open before taking further time off, the tournament sponsors no doubt delighted to have the Masters Champion involved especially given that of the leading five eligible world ranked players he is the only player heading to Maui.

Tiger Woods, Henrik Stenson, Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose were all winners on the PGA Tour in 2013 and therefore eligible to play in this traditional year opening event but none have entered.

Defending champion Dustin Johnson will play as will the 2013 PGA Champion Jason Dufner while Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson are the only players aside from Scott from the world top ten.

Woods, the world number one and winner of five events in 2014 has not played the Hyundai or its equivalent since 2005 when he finished 3rd preferring instead to typically kick off his US campaign at Torrey Pines in late January although he has often played earlier in European Tour events in the Middle East.
