Future stars at Master of Amateurs

BY Bruce Young | Australian Mens Amateur Tour | 2014 Australian Master of the Amateurs | Preview | 06 Jan 2014

The 2014 Master of the Amateurs begins on Tuesday January 7th with a field of 54 high class amateurs to face the starter over the famed Royal Melbourne layout in Melbourne Victoria.

The event has continued to build in stature and profile since its inception in 1997 when won by Barry Miles but some of the more recognised winners since include Brendan Jones, Jason Day, Ashley Hall and the recently turned professional Nathan Holman.

Queenslander Viraat Bhadhwar is the defending champion following his barnstorming final round at Royal Melbourne twelve months ago to defeat the very much in form Brady Watt.

Badhwar has been playing collegiate golf for Stanford University in California in recent months but the Indian raised golfer has returned home to defend his title.

American Jordan Niebrugge is the leading world ranked player in the field while Victorian Lucas Herbert, who finished as the leading Australian at the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship, is Australia’s leading world ranked player to tee it up.

Niebrugge won the Western Amateur in 2013 and as a result of winning the Public Links Championship he will tee it up at the Masters Augusta National in April

Georgia Tech’s Oliver Schniederjans is another of the American players with credentials on his side.

Other Australians expected to do well include Queenslander Taylor Macdonald, South Australian Chris Brown and the brilliant Victorian Ryan Ruffles who finished as the second best amateur at the recent Australian Open.
