Three way tie at Master of the Amateurs

BY Bruce Young | Australian Mens Amateur Tour | 2014 Australian Master of the Amateurs | Day One | 07 Jan 2014

Victorian youngster Fraser Droop and Queenslanders James Gibellini and Simon Viitakangas lead after the opening round of the Master of the Amateurs at Royal Melbourne. All three produced rounds of two under par 70.

Droop, from Yarrawonga on the Victoria New South Wales border, recovered from a late double bogey after earlier taking the lead, to birdie his 17th hole and share the lead with Gibellini who had finished an hour earlier than him.

Gibellini, a member at Emerald Lakes Golf Club on the Gold Coast is emerging as one of Australia’s better amateurs over the past twelve months especially since the likes of Cameron Smith, Brady Watt, Nathan Holman and Brett Drewitt have left the amateur ranks to play professional golf.

Like Droop, Gibellini began his round at the 10th and although he bogeyed his opening hole he soon knuckled down with three birdies in his next five holes.

Viitakangas won the Port Phillip Amateur Championship last year and interestingly he and Gibellini led the Dunes Medal on the Mornington Peninsula after the opening round two months ago.

West Australian Daniel Hoeve, Royal Melbourne member Jason Perry, and Sydney’s Jordan Zunic are tied in 4th position although just one out of the three way tie for the lead.

Other scores of note include the 72 from talented Victorian teenager Lucas Herbert, 73’s from Japanese star Konishi Kenta, American Michael Johnson, defending champion Viirat Bandhwa and Chinese 13 year old Ye Wocheng.

The event is played over 72 holes.
