Queenslander Simon Viittakangas has taken the outright lead through 36 holes at the Master of the Amateurs at Royal Melbourne, the Gold Coast based golfer producing a second consecutive round of 70 to lead by one over American Cameron Wilson and by two over Tasmanian Cory Crawford.

Viitikangas was a member of the successful Queensland Interstate team in 2013 and has made significant progress in recent months in the amateur ranks.

He won the 2012 Port Phillip Amateur Championship in perhaps his most successful individual title in the game but he also performed well at the Dunes Medal late last year.

Wilson, Crawford and Todd Sinnott produced the best rounds of the day (69).

Viitakangas’ joint first round leaders, James Gibellini and Fraser Droop slipped to 8th and 13th respectively.

The event is played over 72 holes.
