Viitakangas' wire to wire MOA victory

Queensland golfer Simon Viitakangas has led or shared the lead at the 2014 Master of the Amateurs at Royal Melbourne from go to whoa, recording a two shot victory over Victorian Todd Sinnott to secure his most significant moment in golf and elevate his status in Australian amateur golf.

Viitakangas, who twelve months ago tried without success to secure his Tour card in both Australia and Asia, made the decision to stick with the amateur ranks during 2013 and is likely to remain there until at least late in 2014.

Bogeys at his final two holes perhaps flattered his chasers as it was an emphatic victory for the 21 year old.

Viitakangas who works at the Palmer Gold Coast Golf Club in Robina on the Gold Coast has set about a fitness and weight loss programme over the last few months and the benefits are now showing with not only this victory but a greater level of consistency in other amateur events of late.

Viitakangas was also a member of the victorious Queensland Interstate side in 2013.

Sinnott, who shared the lead into the final round with Viitakangas, struggled through his opening nine holes and although he steadied to play the final nine in one under the damage had already been done.

Victorian teenager, Lucas Herbert, added further to his growing reputation with a final round of 70 (the best of the day) to finish alone in 3rd position, one shot ahead of American Cameron Wilson.

Many of those who competed this week will also tee it up at the Australian Amateur Championship in Adelaide next week including Viitakangas who must now come into consideration to win his national amateur title
