NSW Open gets big ALPG events underway

BY Bruce Young | ALPG Tour | 2014 Bing Lee Fuitsu General Women's NSW Open | Preview | 22 Jan 2014

The first of the bigger events on the 2014 ALPG schedule begins this Friday when the Bing Lee Fujitsu General Women’s NSW Open is played at the Oatlands Golf Club in Sydney’s north western suburbs.

The tournament will be followed by next week’s New Zealand Women’s Open in Christchurch, the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters on the Gold Coast and the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open in Melbourne.

The other three are co sanctioned with either the Ladies European or LPGA Tours while the Women’s NSW Open is a stand-alone ALPG event.

That has not stopped it attracting a good field however with many here to shake off some holiday season rust and ready their games for the season ahead.

The in form Swedish golfer, Daniela Holmqvist might well start as favourite although Frenchwoman Joanna Klatten who like Holmqvist has also played well in recent pro-ams in NSW is another who is expected to do well.

A resurgent Gwladys Nocera, Becky Brewerton and the most credentialed player in line-up, Laura Davies, are amongst the more recognisable names in the field.

Nocera won twice on the Ladies European Tour in 2013 and finished 4th on the Order of Merit there. She is returning to the level of form which saw her as one of the dominant players in European golf several years back.

Australia’s leading chances are expected to come from Sarah Kemp, Stacey Keating, Lindsey Wright, Rebecca Artis and Kristie Smith.
