Lydia Ko gets LPGA Tour career underway

BY Bruce Young | LPGA Tour | 2014 Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic | Preview | 22 Jan 2014

The LPGA Tour begins this week, several weeks earlier then has been the case in recent years, when the Pure Silk Bahamas Classic gets underway on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

The event is being played for the second occasion although in 2013 it was staged in the middle of the year while this year it launches the 2014 LPGA Tour before the Tour heads to Melbourne in three weeks time for the Australian Women’s Open.

Weather nearly destroyed the event last year and the move to January is hoped to avoid any concerns in that regard. Only twelve holes per round were playable and in the end the organisers did well to get a result.

Certainly indications so far this week are that the golf course is in outstanding condition.

With Inbee Park and Suzanne Pettersen not playing this week the leading world ranked player in the field is Stacy Lewis.

Lewis finished well back in the tournament last year although given the circumstances not a lot can be read into last year’s results.

Much of the interest will be on the first appearance on the LPGA Tour as a cardholder of New Zealander Lydia Ko. Ko turned professional late last year and has already won in the paid ranks when successful in Korea. She has of course won several other professional events as an amateur including two Canadian Opens on the LPGA Tour.

She is expected to be to provide a much needed boost for the LPGA Tour and her debut as an official member will be watched with much interest.

Katherine Kirk (formerly Hull Kirk) and Sarah Jane Smith are the only two Australians in this week’s field
