He was runner up last year, but Jason Day wasn’t going to let this one get away from him. The Queensland teenager today finished strongly to take out the 2006 NEC Master of the Amateurs tournament played at the Yarra Yarra Golf Club in Melbourne.
After a shaky start with bogeys on his second and third holes, the 2004 World Junior Champion settled down with one birdie on the front nine and another four on the back nine to finish three under for the day and victory by two shots.
Just 18 years of age, Day has tournaments in Australia and the United States over the next 12 months and will assess his plans to turn pro after that.
With 68 today Victoria Golf Club’s Matthew Griffin stormed into second place. He was two shots clear of joint overnight leader Jamie Crow from Kingston Heath.
But the best round of the day was recorded by Andrew Kelly from Wangaratta Golf Club. His 65 equalled the course record for Yarra Yarra set on Monday by professionals Carl Smedley and Euan Walters in the TaylorMade AmPro, the opening round of this tournament. Kelly finished equal fourth with the 2004 NEC Master of the Amateurs winner Andrew Tampion.
2006 winner Jason Day will be presented with the “green jacket” at a special dinner at the new RACV Club in Melbourne tonight.
