Woods faces big day at RACV Royal Pines

Four birdies in her last five holes of today’s third round at the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters at RACV Royal Pines on the Gold Coast has given 23 year old American Cheyenne Woods a great opportunity to win her first event on a recognised golf tour.

Woods began the day in a share of the lead with South African Stacy Lee Brigman but when she bogeyed three of her first five holes things did not look good for the relatively inexperienced Phoenix golfer who was in this situation for the first occasion.

But her closest rivals were also struggling and with her strong finish she was able to edge clear of Brigman to lead by one with another one shot back to the Australian Amateur Champion Minjee Lee of Perth.

England’s Trish Johnson and Sweden’s Camilla Lennarth are another shot further back and appear to be the only remaining genuine chances to the leader.

“I feel great and I think getting through today was huge for me, mentally especially,” said the leader after her round. “I am proud of how I was able to fight through today and tomorrow is just going to be another day to get through. I’m taking it one hole at a time and just staying patient.”

Lee further confirmed her huge potential. The former US Girls Champion and now two time Australian Women’s Amateur Champion is already considered one of Australia’s great future prospects and a win tomorrow would further confirm such.

But the golfing world awaits the arrival of yet another Woods to the winner’s circle. A year on the Ladies European Tour has added a broader base to her game and tomorrow she gets the chance to prove what advantage that has been.
