African Open next for European Tour

BY Bruce Young | 12 Feb 2014

The Africa Open continues the run of European Tour events in South Africa this week when played at the East London Golf Club on the south east corner of the African continent.

Previous winners have been Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen (twice) and Darren Fichardt, so South Africans have dominated yet another home event and stand a good chance of doing so yet again despite the absence of several of their stars.

The leading world ranked player in the field is Frenchman Gregory Bourdy who at number 107 is hardly one of the game’s elite but he is a credentialed player.

Bourdy has made his last twenty cuts worldwide including a win at the Wales Open last year. Bourdy finished runner-up to Darren Fichardt last year.

Thomas Aiken is warming towards a victory with three top tens in his last four starts against better fields than he faces this week. He has produced good solid finishes in this event including when runner-up in 2010.

Jaco Van Zyl is perhaps the best performed in this event having finished inside the top five in his last three starts here at this event. He hasn’t exactly set the world on fire in recent starts but is not playing badly and back on a golf course he appears to enjoy he could again do well.

Emiliano Grillo has been 9th and 10th in his last two starts in this event and importantly for his chance this week he is in good form having finished second at the recent Dubai Desert Classic against a much stronger field than that he faces this week.

Wade Ormsby and Brady Watt are again the only two Australians in the field with Ormsby playing well enough to be a chance to contend.

Watt has only recently turned professional but has struggled to date.
