Gritty Day through to Round of 16

Jason Day has survived yet another tight encounter at the Accenture Match Play Championship at Dove Mountain in Marana in Arizona, defeating American Billy Horschel at the 22nd hole of their second round match up.

After winning at the final hole in yesterday’s opening round match against Thorbjorn Olesen, Day was again required to come from behind to defeat the highly talented Horschel who won last year’s Zurich Classic.

Day was down early. In fact when Horschel birdied three of his first four holes he had taken a three up lead over the Australian and was still three up through ten holes.

Horschel, though, lost his way a little over the closing eight holes of regulation play with three bogeys and with Day able to make several short but testing par saving putts he kept himself alive.

Both players made par at each of the first three holes of extra time before Day closed things out with a birdie at the 4th.

Day will now play last week’s European Tour winner George Coetzee who also survived an extended match in his second round battle against American Patrick Reed.

Other second winners were Louis Oosthuizen, Webb Simpson, Jason Dufner, Matt Kuchar, Jordan Spieth, Harris English, Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan, Graeme McDowell, Victor Dubuisson and Bubba Watson and Ernie Els.
