Scott poised at storm delayed Cadillac

American Harris English has the clubhouse lead the delayed first round of the WGC Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral Resort and Spa, the 24 year old one of only six players to complete their round after storms had swept across Southern Florida.

English, a winner in Mexico earlier in the season and in a run of solid form of late, reeled off a back nine of 32 before the storm hit to finish with a round of 69 to lead in the clubhouse but Jason Dufner, Hunter Mahan, Francesco Molinari and Patrick Reed are still on the golf course and when they return tomorrow might well have the opportunity in calm morning conditions to take the outright lead.

A number of others will also get their chance tomorrow with some players still having nine holes to play of round one.

Adam Scott leads the four Australians, the 33 year old timing his run into Augusta National in a month’s time with a solid start to be at 2 under and one behind the lead. Scott took a while to get going today but birdies at his 8th and 9th holes saw him well placed as the event heads into day two.

Scott Hend, who flew back from the New Zealand Open on Monday to play in the event for the first time, is at even par and Brett Rumford, who is in the field courtesy of his great season in Europe last year, made the worst possible start with an 11 at the first hole and is at 8 over and in a share of last position at present.

Jason Day withdrew from the event before he had even started with a ligament strain in his left thumb, no doubt keen to have himself fit and ready for the opening major of the year at Augusta National.
