West Australian Amateur underway

The West Australian Amateur Championships began today at the Royal Perth Golf Club with several of the country’s leading amateurs taking part.

West Australian amateur golf has been at perhaps its peak over the past twelve months with the performances of Oliver Goss, Brady Watt, Curtis Luck and Jarrod Felton amongst the men and Minjee Lee, Hannah Green and Hayley Bettencourt amongst the women starring both nationally and internationally.

With Watt having turned professional, Goss playing collegiate golf in the US and Lee returning from a great week in China last week the strength of this field has been weakened a little but there is still a lot of interest in just who might take the coveted titles.

In the men’s Amateur Australian Amateur runner-up Curtis Luck, NSW Amateur Champion Jarryd Felton, appear the logical favourites but Daniel Hoeve just goes quietly about his business and could do well.

Minwoo Lee, the brother of Minjee is another whose performance will be a source of interest and intrigue especially given his runner-up effort behind Brady Watt last year.

Hannah Green is a member of this year’s Queen Sirirkit Cup team and on that basis alone deserves to be the favourite although Hayley Bettencourt is well credentialed.

Both events contain 36 holes qualifying with the finals over 36 holes to be played on Sunday.
