Self-taught golf professional Ewan Porter leads the Victorian PGA Championship by two shots after a record-equalling 64 at Sanctuary Lakes.
The 23-year-old from Sydney grabbed eight second-round birdies in compiling a total of 133 – eleven under par.
The chasing pack of three players includes Tour veteran Anthony Painter, the up-and-coming Luke Hickmott and Andrew Johnson, a former captain of the South Australian amateur team.
Queenslander Wayne Perske added a fine 67 to an opening round of 70 to lie in fifth place.
“I’ve never really had a coach,” Porter said. “I always thought I could figure it out for myself. But I did have a couple of lessons from Gary Barter recently and my swing feels great.”
Porter began his second round quite conservatively with five straight pars before bursting into life with six birdies within the space of eight holes.
Following another period of consolidation he set sail for the finish line, holing wonderful birdie putts on the last two holes to tie the course record established 10 months ago by Steven Bowditch and Andrew Pitt.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms forced tournament officials to suspend with the entire afternoon field yet to finish.
