A strong field of 90 players will contest the 2014 South Australian Medal & Amateur Championship, which tees off at Flagstaff Hill and Blackwood Golf Clubs with the stroke play rounds held on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 March.

A field of 73 players will contest the Men’s SA Medal Event over 72 holes at Flagstaff Hill Golf Club.

Following 36 holes on day one, the leading 32 players plus ties will continue on to the second day to play a further 36 holes. The leading 16 qualifiers from day two will continue on to contest the SA Amateur Championship Match Play at Kooyonga Golf Club with the final being held on Sunday 23 March.

With 2013 State Captain Chris Brown, having recently joined the professional ranks, this year’s Championship promises to be a tightly contested affair with 10 interstate players and one International adding considerable depth to a field which features 32 players boasting a handicap of scratch or better.

Among the favourites for this year’s title are SA’s leading player Anthony Murdaca and 2012 champion Jack Williams both from The Grange Golf Club.

18 year old Murdaca currently ranked 39th in the world and 15th ranked nationally has had a solid few months finishing 11th at The Masters of the Amateurs in Victoria, reaching the semi-finals at The Australian Amateur held in Adelaide, 11th at the Lake Macquarie Amateur in NSW and 17th at the Tasmanian Open.

Jack Williams last year’s SA Amateur medallist and currently ranked 316th in the world is in good form after placing 11th at the Tasmanian Open and 11th at last weekend’s Riversdale Cup in Victoria.

Others to watch are locals Phil Chapman SA Amateur Champion in 1990 and 1995 and former Australian Cricketer Greg Blewett.

A field of 17 players will contest the Women’s Championship, with Jenny Lee from Glenelg Golf Club starting favourite. Lee is currently ranked number 7 in the Nation and 176 in the World Rankings. Lee’s best result this season has been a semi-final placing in the Australian Amateur Championship.

Sue Wooster (The National), Jo Charlton (Metropolitan) and Kono Matsumoto (Victoria) are the main interstate contenders.

SA’s Caitlin Roberts (Royal Adelaide) is another to watch after finding form with a 7th place finish at the Riversdale Cup.

The women’s field contest the Medal rounds over 18 holes at Blackwood Golf Club and Flagstaff Hill Golf Club on day’s one and two respectively, before moving onto the Amateur Championship match-play rounds at Kooyonga.
