Big week for Australian juniors

While all eyes are on Augusta National this week, the local stage is set for Australia’s best junior golfers to tee off in this year’s Australian Boys’ and Girls’ Junior Championships, which begin tomorrow in Victoria’s Yarra Valley and run from 9-11 April.

The Australian Girls’ Amateur will be played at Yering Meadows Golf Club, Croydon with the 5,544 metre lengthened layout sure to test the field over the 72-holes stroke play.

Shelly Shin (NSW) will be a top contender after a number of top finishes including winning the recent 2014 Riversdale Cup and reaching the quarter-finals of the 2014 Australian Amateur in January.

2014 Australian Amateur runner-up Karis Davidson (Qld) will also be looking for her first National title along with Julienne Soo (Vic) who has had a number of top 10 finishes in Australian Girls’ Amateur Ranking events over the past 6 months including runner-up in the 2014 SA Masters and Semi Finalist in the 2013 Victorian Amateur.

The Australian Boys’ Amateur will be played at Heritage Golf and Country Club, the site of various PGA Tour of Australasia events. The event is wide open this year with last year’s winner Anthony Murdaca (SA) having left the junior ranks.

Curtis Luck (WA) who currently sits on top of the Australian Boys’ Amateur Rankings will be a favorite after a great start to the year including finishing runner-up in the 2014 Australian Amateur and wins the 2014 NSW Medal and 2014 Victorian Junior Masters.

Victorian Ryan Ruffels will also be a top contender after his recent win in the 2014 Riversdale Cup along with fellow Victorian Zach Murray who has performed well over the past 6 months with wins in the 2013 Aaron Baddeley International Championship Australian Final and the 2013 Victorian Amateur.

With both champions gaining an exemption into the respective Australian Opens, the events are sure to bring out the best in Australia’s junior golfers.

Following the conclusion of the Junior Amateurs, state teams will remain in Victoria for the Interstate Teams Matches to be played at the respective clubs.

The Girls’ Interstate Teams’ Matches will be played from 13-15 April with New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria contesting the event, whilst the Boys’ Interstate Teams Matches will be played from 13-16 April will all Australian states and territories represented.
