Rodger Davis secures card for 2003

US Senior Tour rookie Rodger Davis has managed to secure his 2003 playing privileges with a ninth place finish at the last full field event of the year, the SBC Championship in San Antonio.
Davis, who was in thirty first place leading into this week, knew that he probably needed a top ten to consolidate that position. After this event the top thirty one gain a start in the season ending Tour Championship and more importantly a fully exempt card for next year. Without that Davis would have been forced to return to the all demanding tour school final stage where only eight such cards are available to the one hundred or so lining up.
Davis was in third place heading into round three but three bogies in the first four holes had him on the back foot from the start. Another bogey at the twelfth had him heading even further in the wrong direction but a comeback birdie at fifteen and three pars to finish saw him secure ninth place, $US37,700 and twenty seventh spot on the money list.
Davis now heads to Okalahoma for next week's Tour Championship with fellow Australian Stewart Ginn who by virtue of his win at the Seniors Championship in Dearborn, will finish around twentieth on the money list. The Senior Tour Championship carries prizemoney of $US2,500,000 with just the top thirty one from the money list eligible.
Considering that Davis did not play the US Tour on a regular basis during his earlier years his first season has been a great success and with that behind him he appears to have a lucrative future ahead.
The tournament was won by Dana Quigley, who held on to beat fast finishing Bob Gilder by a shot with Vincente Fernandez in third.
Stewart Ginn was 26th, Graham Marsh 38th and David Graham 68th.
