Holmes' legend grows at Quail Hollow

BY Bruce Young | US PGA Tour | 2014 Wells Fargo Championship | Wrap | 05 May 2014

J.B. Holmes is the sort of golfer who develops a cult following on the PGA Tour and today he added to that folklore with his third PGA title, winning the Wells Fargo Championship by one over Jim Furyk and by two over Martin Flores at Quail Hollow in Charlotte.

Holmes threatens to join the likes of Bubba Watson, John Daly and the like with his creative shotmaking skills and outrageous power and the crowds just seem to love and warm to him because of the trials and tribulations he has overcome.

Furyk had begun the final round 90 minutes ahead of and seven shots behind Holmes but his final round of 65 left the former winner and runner-up in the event with an outside chance of the title.

The long hitting Holmes, though, who has been playing on a medical exemption for much of this season following an ankle injury last year when roller blading, was able to hold on despite struggling over the closing holes.

Holmes had undergone brain surgery in late 2011 but fought his way back to be playing again in 2012 before his accident early last year put him out of action. He has played well this season however as he chased the $580,299 he needed to regain full status.

He had already done that prior to this week having made ten of eleven cuts including when 11th last week in New Orleans where he cleared the way for full status again.

Furyk continues a very solid season this his fifth top ten in just ten starts.

Final scores

Geoff Ogilvy continued his ongoing improvement when he finished in a tied for 14th to lead the Australians. Bogeys at the final two holes proved costly but overall it was an encouraging week for Ogilvy as, after a horror run, he has now made four of his last five cuts.
