Adam Scott to become world number one

BY Bruce Young | 15 May 2014

You would have to say that the last month has been one of the greatest periods in the life of Adam Scott.

Just a month after being married in the Bahamas, Adam Scott is set to become the second Australian to hold the mantle of the number one player in men’s golf.

In a release today, those who co-ordinate and calculate the world ranking have indicated that Scott will become the leading ranked player at the completion of this week’s HP Byron Nelson Championship in Dallas.

Neither Scott nor the man he will surpass, Tiger Woods, are playing this week but with Woods’ ranking average reducing quickly each week and such a small margin currently separating the pair, Scott will become the number one without teeing it up.

The next time Scott will play will likely be at the Memorial in two week’s time, the first time he will play an event as the game’s highest ranked player although given the closeness amongst the leading few players and the strength of fields in upcoming events there could be regular changes over the next few weeks.

There is still a chance that he might play the Crowne Plaza event at the Colonial in Fort Worth next week but that is still only a possibility rather then probability.

The rise in fortunes for Scott essentially began three years ago when he finished runner-up at Augusta National, his record since built around a far greater level of consistency than was the case before.

A win by Matt Kuchar this week in Dallas could see him move to number three in the world and within striking distance of him becoming the number one soon after.
