Bjorn and Lowry race clear at Wentworth

Dane Thomas Bjorn and Ireland’s Shane Lowry have raced clear of the field at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in Surrey.

Both capitalised on and consolidated their opening rounds of 62 and 64 respectively to be at 10 under and four clear of the chasing pack.

“It was a testing day,” said Bjorn referring to the wet and windy conditions throughout much of the day. "It was one of those days where you just had to try and stay focused. But I worked hard and I got myself around the golf course with a decent score, especially taking the conditions into consideration. So I’m pretty pleased with my day’s work to be honest.”

Tied in 3rd position are two time winner, Luke Donald whose round of 67 was the lowest of the day, and Rafa Cabrera Bello, with tournament favourites Henrik Stenson and Rory McIlory one further back.

The weekend promises much especially with Stenson hot on the heels of Adam Scott in the pursuit of the number one position in the game. Stenson needs only a top 6 this week and Scott to finish outside the top nine in Fort Worth for the Australian’s reign at the top to be short lived.

Scott has made a relatively slow start at the Crowne Plaza so the battle between the two on opposite sides of the Atlantic creates a tournament within a tournament.

McIlroy appears to have put behind him the drama of announcing the split in the relationship between he and Caroline Wozniacki earlier this week and although five from the lead appears very much in contention. McIlroy does not enjoy a good record around Wentworth but maybe adversity is helping him this week.

Richard Green followed up his great week in Spain last week with another solid start to be the leading Australian at 1 under and in a share of 29th while Brett Rumford missed the cut.
